Film Reveals True Lives of People Experiencing Homelessness in Chicago, Proceeds Benefit New Mental Health Support Group for Homeless

CHICAGO, IL, May 6, 2019 – Street Life: Faces Uncovered, a short documentary by Street Samaritans founder Neal Karski, tells the stories of Chicago locals dealing with homelessness at different stages of getting back on their feet and addresses misconceptions about the causes of homelessness. Sponsored by Pilsen’s Italian Ice, this one night only screening will be held on May 16 at Center on Halsted’s Hoover-Leppen Theatre in the Lakeview neighborhood.

Proceeds from this event will support Care For Friends’ new mental health initiative to provide a safe space for attendees discuss topics they feel are important. The discussions will be peer-drive but will be facilitated by a licensed therapist.

“We are thrilled to be launching this program in May during Mental Health Awareness Month,” said Care For Friends Executive Director Hope Pavich. “A report from the National Alliance on Mental Illness shows that 70 to 90% of people who seek proper treatment for mental health disorders see a significant reduction in symptoms. We hope that this support group will help our guests take the first steps toward mental wellness.”

The evening will begin with a reception and introduction with director Neal Karski and conclude with a Q&A session led by Emmy nominee Whitney Reynolds on what is being done to address Chicago’s homelessness epidemic, what more can be done and how those successes can be replicated on a global scale. One attendee will win a prize package donated by the Chicago-based You Are Beautiful movement.
